An airbrush spray tan is a professional tanning technique using a handheld airbrush or spray gun to apply a tanning solution evenly onto the skin. The solution contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless solution derived from natural sugars, which reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of the skin to produce a natural-looking tan. At The Beauty Spot Studio we use only Norvell Spray Tan Solutions in the Venetian line which is designed to give a natural, sun-kissed tan without the orange undertones often associated with sunless tanning products. It has a violet base, which neutralize yellow or brassy tones in the skin, resulting in a balanced, natural-looking color.

Here’s how it works:

1. Preparation: 12 to 24 hours before the spray tan appointment, exfoliate skin and shave to remove dead cells and unwanted hair. This will ensure an even application. Exfoliating and/or shaving directly before a spray tan WILL result in an uneven or splotchy tan. Do not apply any lotions, oils, antiperspirant, deodorant, powders or perfumes prior to spraying tanning they WILL interfere with the tan. Arrive for your appointment with clean bare skin wearing something loose fitting to avoid any creases in the skin. It’s best to wear loose clothing in the hours leading up to your spray tan appointment as well.

2. Application: During the appointment Norvelle Venetian Spray Tan Solution will be sprayed on the body using a hand held airbrush gun specifically designed for the spray tan application. This process is done in a ventilated booth where your privacy is protected. At The Beauty Spot Studio we encourage spray tan clients to wear as much or as little clothing as they feel comfortable giving them their desired results.

3. Development: Color develops over 1 to 12 hours depending on the solution used during the service as the DHA interacts with the skin. Norvelle Venetian solutions contain a cosmetic bronzer, providing an instant glow, but the actual tan deepens as the DHA takes effect over time. The cosmetic bronzer will rinse off easily once the solution has fully processed. The longer the solution is left on the skin to develop (up to 12 hours) the deeper, darker and richer the results. You can control how dark your tan is by deciding when to shower the solution off the skin. Keep in mind that the solution is developing under the cosmetic bronzer. As it develops the bronzer will make your skin appear darker than it actually is when your shower. Remember that at any point your color will be about half as dark as you see when your shower the solution off your body. So don’t be alarmed if you wake up after processing for 12 hours and you seem too dark.

4. Aftercare: While the spray tan is processing it is essential to avoid getting the skin wet be it from sweating, bathing, or coming into contact with water (rain) or washing hands etc. Any wetness on the skin will cause the spray tan solution to run leaving streaks or splotches that often times can not be fix and will have to fade over time as the final results age and fade. Hydration and moisturizing afterward the spray tan solution has processed and has been rinsed off can prolong the life of the tan. The more scrubbing of the skin or shaving and the more exposure to water or sweating will fade the spray tan faster. Generally a spray tan looks good for about 5 days and can last up to 8 days as it fades. Regular spray tanning will keep your skin looked tanned and fade free.
